Opus scutulatum is a Roman pavement technique in which larger pieces of marble are set among the more standardized, smaller mosaic tesserae. The name comes from the Latin word for work or workmanship (opus) and a word meaning diamond-shaped (scutulatum). Pliny the Elder writes that this type of mosaic pavement first appeared in the Temple of Capitoline Jupiter after the start of the Third Punic War in 149 BCE.
